Faerie and Mermaid Cake

The faerie and mermaid cake that my niece Greer requested...

The bottom 9" layer is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (as per Greer's request) and the top 6" layer is yellow cake with buttercream frosting (as per my preference!) Both layers are filled with vanilla pudding.

The fondant I used for this cake is marshmallow fondant that I made from melted marshmallows and confectioners sugar. I really love this recipe, not only is it really easy to work with, it tastes great! The faerie and mermaid are also made out of fondant. All the fishes, flowers, and other decorations on the cake are made with buttercream.

I made the faerie wings out of the fondant and then painted them with food dye.

The sparkly stuff on the cake (which I told Greer was faerie dust) is edible glitter.

I made this cake over two days, since I didn't want to rush and get it all done in one night. I made the fondant, faerie, and mermaid the first night, and the rest of the cake was finished the next night.

On a somewhat morbid side note... both the faerie and mermaid were happily dissected and eaten by both my nieces and my nephew... only pieces of hair were left in the end...
