I was a little upset over how these turned out. When I first put the fondant on the cakes it was perfectly fine, then by the next day it was drooping. My friend Cyndi and I tried to do a little surgery, but there was only so much that could be fixed.
Anyway, these cakes were made for my co-worker Jill for her baby shower. I wanted these to come out perfectly for her, but in the end I just have to be thankful they made it to the shower in decent shape.
Cyndi and I both think that the frosting I used is the culprit behind the sagging fondant. I tried to save Jill a little money by going with canned frosting instead of actual buttercream-I will never do this again! I am very frustrated about the results.
Each block is supposed to represent the parents, Jill and Nick, and the pink block is for their daughter Lily.
The only thing I really like about these cakes is the teddy bear I made to go on Lily's cake.
Thanks go out to Cyndi who helped me with the cake, and a big hug to Jill who told me she liked the cakes, even though they weren't perfect. Love you guys!
Ooh these are adorable. How did you do the colored fondant on the outside of the block? Did you cut out the openings from a solid covering piece or did you somehow smooth strips together on top of the white?
Canned frosting has a much softer consistency and spreads oddly over time. Only by heating the frosting can you get an even crystallization and consistency but it has to air harden over a period of several hours, which makes it a pain in the butt to fondant with!!

Yeah, I learned that the hard way. I had frosted them and let the cakes harden for a day before I put the fondant on, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces.
